Karate is for Life, Not for Points

Karate is for Life, Not for Points

It is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war

We focus on fostering kindness, humility, and inner strength. Training should do more than fill time. It should build focus, respect, confidence, and habits that carry into everyday life.

Dojo Values

"The essence of karate-do lies in the development of the individual."

Inspired by traditional Chito-Ryu values

You Know Where You Stand

Belt by belt, technique by technique. Progress is visible. There's no guessing how you're going.

It Changes You Off the Mat Too

Students get quieter under pressure. They handle frustration better. Parents notice it first.

Training Programs

Karate classes for children, teens, and adults

Experienced Instruction

Sensei Noonan has been at this since 1980. He's not going anywhere.

Noonan Sensei has spent his life studying martial arts and in particular traditional karate, the ancient Okinawan form of Toudi now known as Chito-Ryu Karate-Do. After beginning training in Australia, he travelled to Japan in 1985 to deepen his knowledge and has returned every year since for intense training, teaching, and grading. Promoted to 7th Degree Black Belt in 2017 and holding the title of Kyoshi, he has taught in Japan, Ireland, Scotland, and across Australia.

If you've been to a gym that hires part-time instructors, you'll notice the difference immediately. Sensei Noonan is here. Every class. He knows your name, where you're at, and what you need to work on.

40+ Years Teaching

Training in Japan every year since 1985. 7th Dan. Kyoshi title.

Direct Lineage

Trained under senior Chito-Ryu masters in Japan, maintaining a direct connection to the style's original teaching lineage.

Testimonials

Real people. Real results.

Don't just take our word for it — hear directly from the students and families who train with us every week.

My daughter started at the Karate Institute the week she turned 4 — she cried (less and less) for the first 6 lessons and we persevered! Now, she can't wait to get to Karate! I wanted Karate to be a part of her life as it teaches respect, discipline and strength from within but I didn't want her to do Karate just anywhere with half-hearted instructors. Mike and his team are second to none. I appreciate the manner in which they teach and conduct themselves and the Institute each and every day. My daughter has been doing Karate here for a year and a half now and she has become so focussed which has echoed throughout her school and home life. She is respectful to others, respects herself and doesn't give in if a challenge arises — something I attribute to the Karate Institute. Thank you for providing such a great place for children and adults alike to learn so much!

Our son Tom has been attending Karate now for over a year at The Karate Institute. Not only does Tom really enjoy the training, we have also seen many positive outcomes such as an increase in flexibility, endurance and strength. Of particular note, the discipline instilled in the students through the training is exceptional. We believe that Tom is more confident as a result of learning karate as well as having a real sense of achievement as he progresses through the different belts. Attending karate has been a great experience for Tom and we would recommend it to any family.

The sensei is an amazing teacher. He really has a passion for his art and inspires his students. This type of karate really is good for kids to learn discipline and commitment. I have been coming here for 6 years and it is like family here so welcoming and friendly.

If you are researching places to learn the art of Karate, you need to put The Australian Institute of Karate on your list. Sensei Noonan's 30 years plus of experience with the Chito-Ryu style of karate is why I come back week after week to this Dojo. His training and instruction is second to none. His passion for Chito-Ryu is shown in every lesson he teaches. The institute has a very warm and friendly atmosphere and is very welcoming to new students of all ages, this atmosphere encourages all students to train hard and achieve their own personal goals. Training at the Dojo is something I look forward to each week, Tasseikan Dojo is a special place.

TAIK is helping us in our role as parents. At TAIK our children are required to demonstrate perseverance, commitment, hard work and grit. In their lessons, they practically apply some of the values that we are encouraging at home. TAIK thereby authenticates the advice we give as parents.

Zavier enjoys karate at The Australian Institute of Karate. He is proud to wear the uniform and I feel that he has a sense of belonging. This pleases me because he is an only child and he can become lonely. I started him at the school not only for the fitness and coordination it would bring, but also the discipline and being able to follow instructions etc. Zavier started at the school a year ago at the age of four. The staff there are exceptional and we are more than happy with everything. Thank you.

I love karate because it has taught me discipline and lots of different techniques that I can use to protect myself.

The Australian Institute of Karate has been an incredibly positive part of our lives for the last 7 years. Both my daughters train several times a week and they love the sport and the friends they have made at the Dojo. They have learnt so many different skills including self control, discipline and self defence techniques. It has also been wonderful for their overall strength and physical fitness.
